Summary/Abstract: In the Western intellectual tradition there are several treatises about tyranny and its regimes. The understanding of this kind of regimes was, to a certain point, a central theme in political philosophy. However, there are few works that go beyond the actual surface of the subject. As I intend to argue,Étienne de La Boétie’s Discourse on Voluntary Servitude and Havel’s The Power of The Powerless are two critical standpoints on tyranny, that build-up on a comprehensive analysis of human nature. The main purpose of the following article is to demonstrate how the nature of the tyrannical regimes cannot be grasped in absence of a certain view on human nature. From Étienne de La Boétie reflections on the duality of human behaviour to Havel’s idea of a fictional pact between people and the regime, both inquiries are brought together by the consideration that people cannot thrive in freedom without a government based on human rights.
