Present and Future: Gramsci's Time and His Future

Summary/Abstract: The complex contemporary scenario, which sees democratic systems engaged in a mortal challenge that opposes them both to the "mutant" populism of the latest generation and to the persistent technocratic delegitimization, is the fruit of decades of gestation: Western democracies took shape during the extraordinary period that goes from the Second World War to the end of the century, their life has passed in apparent safety from the Trente Glorieuses to the neoliberal experiment. The only possible non-tragic way out of the current crisis is to profoundly renew the very idea of democracy, anchoring its ancient valuesto the typical characteristics of contemporaneity, renewing the miracle accomplished in the second half of the 40s. It is therefore more appropriate than ever to reread that miracle, and if the teachings are now outdated, the method of those who, with precision and foresight, saw it arriving in the second half of the twentieth century is more relevant than ever: Antonio Gramsci.
