Summary/Abstract: Although, since his return to Italy in 1944, Palmiro Togliatti consistently referred to Antonio Gramsci (who had died in 1937) to provide theoretical foundation for his work to rebuild the Italian Communist Party as amass party, far from the paradigms of the Third International, and for his policy of embracing parliamentary democracy and collaborating with all other anti fascist political forces, most of the innovations he introduced through his actions came from his own experience and cultural and political perspective. However, his reference to Gramsci served to lend authority to his new politics, and the diffusion of Gramsci's writings was also due, in addition to the cultural affinities between the two, to the need to dialogue with non-Communist and even non-Marxist intellectuals, thanks to the example of a great Communist intellectual like Gramsci.
