Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the possibility that the image of Satan in Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita” and in Bortko’s film adaptation can be understood as an evolving demonology. The goal is achieved through solving several problems, the most important of which are: presenting the view of Satan in the Judeo-Christian tradition and in some literary works chosen by the author; an attempt to reveal the dynamics of the development of the image of Satan in the theological and literary traditions to which the author refers, as well as in Bortko’s film adaptation of the work with the same name. The paper provides some information about Bulgakov’s novel and its cinematic interpretation, with an emphasis on Bortko’s film adaptation. The concept of “literary theology” is introduced. The materials relevant to the study are analysed, and conclusions are drawn based on the obtained results. As a result of the conducted in this way research, it is concluded that Woland as a literary character could be interpreted in the context of the development of demonology but within the framework of a literary, not confessionally-bound, theology. In Bortko’s film, the image of the devil is not rewritten using the means of cinematography but is creatively rethought by its director. This study will be useful to anyone interested in the relationship between theology and literature in Bulgakov’s work.
