Summary/Abstract: Historical folk songs are a significant part of Bulgarian folklore. They use artistic imagery and poetic techniques to reflect real historical figures and events, often created by those who lived during the times and circumstances described in the lyrics. These songs sometimes include striking details and intriguing suggestions that prompt questions about their historical accuracy. This paper examines the depiction of the Virgin Mary as the saviour of Malta during the conflict between the Order of Malta and the Ottoman Empire, as represented in Bulgarian folk songs with the motif “A Virgin Rescues Malta” and in artefacts of the Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes, and Malta. By comparing these two groups of artistic works, the report aims to explore the similarities and differences in their portrayals, as well as the historical information presented in the Bulgarian folk songs, and to investigate the basis for the claims made within the songs.
