On the Early Cyrillic Translations of Thomas à Kempis’s De Imitatione Christi

Summary/Abstract: This article examines the early Cyrillic translations (Ruthenian and Church Slavonic) of the Catholic treatise De Imitatione Christi by Thomas à Kempis. The author concludes that the earliest translations, produced in the first half of the seventeenth century, were fragmentary and originated within the cultural milieu of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Kyiv Metropolitan Peter Mohyla played a decisive role in the creation of the Ruthenian translation. The study introduces a Church Slavonic translation found in the Verse Prologue and proposes its possible Ukrainian origin. In the concluding section, the article publishes the text of the homily On the Honor of the Sacraments and the Priesthood found in the Rhymed version of the Verse Prologue for December 15. The study identifies the textual features of this text and references other didactic collections containing the same Church Slavonic translation. A complete Church Slavonic translation of the treatise was produced in Wallachia in 1647, likely as a result of the close cultural and ecclesiastical relations between Wallachia and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
