Summary/Abstract: The building of the Bulgarian school in Istanbul is part of the properties of the Bulgarian Exarchate on the territory of the Turkish state. Bulgaria and Türkiye have been arguing over its ownership for decades. The demolition of the Bulgarian school in Istanbul prompted a change in Bulgaria’s position on the controversial issue. It shows that even as relations between the two countries develop in a positive direction, their security is not guaranteed. This led the Bulgarian state to make the signing of a cooperation agreement in the field of education, science, and culture between Bulgaria and Türkiye dependent on the resolution of the Exarchate issue. However, this policy was pursued by the Bulgarian state for too short a time to achieve the expected results.
