Summary/Abstract: This article retrospectively analyzes the regime of the royal authoritarian monarchy in Romania, the period 1938-1940 from the perspective of the criticism of Iuliu Maniu, the leader of the National Peasant Party, who was the supporter of the representative democratic regime, of parliamentary constitutionalism, the defender of democratic political and civil rights and freedoms. The confiscation of individual rights and freedoms, the suppression of political parties, the establishment of the single party, the organization of elections and the surrogate of the parliamentary institution, determined Iuliu Maniu to reject the legislative measures of a dictatorial regime, established by decree-laws, promulgated by the monarch. Iuliu Maniu criticized the single party, the annulment of the elections, the dissolution of the political parties, the criticism of the parody of the elections for the Chamber and the Senate, the criticism of the corporate parliament of the establishment of the lands, but also the worst thing that the King, being the self-proclaimed head of the single party, assumed all political responsibility for the acts of the new regime. According to Maniu, the sovereign had to be shielded from responsibility, as this fell to the government.
