Summary/Abstract: The relationship between the United States and the Mediterranean is the story of an ancient one, indeed, one that is fundamental and constitutive of the birth and independence of the former British colony. This relationship naturally had to be rooted in relations with the pre-unification states of the Italian peninsula first, and then with unified Italy. Despite a brief period of conflict during the Second World War, the relationship between the two countries has remained one of deep-rooted friendship, certainly motivated by their respective strategic interests, but also influenced by human and cultural factors. The Cold War and the NATO alliance have essentially solidified this state of relations, a state not belied by the current tendencies of the American administration and the Italian government.
