Cartography of paths. Archive, landscapes, meanings, and names: first sketches for an intellectual biography of Enrique Pezzoni (1926–1989)

Summary/Abstract: The exhumation of various materials linked to the critical, teaching, translation, and editorial practices of Enrique Pezzoni (Buenos Aires, 1926–1989) enabled the assembly of an archive that brought to light several questions concerning the teaching of Latin American literature during the years marked by successive dictatorships in Argentina: the conception of editorial projects aimed at disseminating this literature; the figurations and styles Pezzoni adopted within the translation projects of the Sur and Sudamericana publishing houses; the ways in which his public image reflects the circulation of intellectuals in the mass media; the insights his personal library offers into reading practices and canon formation, and the institutional situations, research decisions, and teaching methods revealed through his correspondence. Some answers to these questions shed light on various areas of critical production, connected different agents and institutions across diverse political, social, and geographical contexts, and revealed a network that allows us to map a landscape composed of proper names, photographs, first-person narratives, publications, documents, and correspondence, among other materials, which this article examines. The symbolic construction of this landscape seeks to reflect on possible approaches and particular perspectives that, while narrating, describing, and interpreting it, explore viable ways of systematising, preserving, disseminating, and making visible the Enrique Pezzoni archive.
