The Influence of Miguel Luis Amunátegui‘s Apuntaciones lexicográficas (1907–1909) on the Academic Dictionary

Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on Miguel Luis de Amunátegui’s Apuntaciones lexicográficas (1907–1909), a work that can be classified as lexicographical criticism. It offers comments and observations on some entries that are absent or poorly treated in the Academy’s dictionary (DRAE), in the hope that the Real Academia de la Lengua Española will consider these assessments and incorporate the changes into its dictionary. Our objective is to understand the influence this author had on the Academy’s work. To this end, these proposals for improvement will first be described and analysed and then the extent to which they were incorporated into editions of the DRAE published after the work appeared will be examined. In this way, the study will seek to highlight the importance of lexicographical criticism as essential material for the historical study of lexicography. In this sense, Amunátegui’s work is a valuable historiographical source for understanding the development of lexicographical technique, and its analysis not only reveals the specific concerns and challenges of lexicography at the time, but also highlights the interaction between specialists and the Academy in the construction of its dictionary. This approach provides a contextualised view of the evolution of Spanish lexicography at the dawn of the 20th century and emphasises dictionary criticism as a driver of change and improvement in lexicographical technique.
