Summary/Abstract: In addition to its decorative role, church painting also has an informative purpose. Those interested in certain aspects of the past often find answers in church frescoes. The same is true when it comes to studying music history, since the painting of Byzantine tradition incorporates elements contemporary with the creation of the fresco, although not specified in the canon of painting, but which complete the iconographic program with everyday-life details wherever possible. The painting of the Sucevița Monastery church and other similar churches constitutes a good source of information about aspects of our musical past. Here we meet a variety of instruments belonging to several musical categories and the contexts in which they were used, which is important for the correct understanding of the musical phenomenon of the second half of the 16th century. Also, from one painting to another and from one period to another, we can observe the evolution of music and musical instruments. Correlating this information with information from other categories of sources helps us better understand the musical phenomenon and the social, cultural and political context in which it manifested itself.
