Summary/Abstract: The "Start of Life" allowance and Start Account - widely known as the Baby Bond - is a distinctive instrument of Hungarian family policy, designed to provide young people with a financial foundation at the beginning of adulthood. This study aims to assess the economic performance of the scheme, with particular emphasis on the return of state contributions and the role of regular family savings. The hypothesis of the study is that the initial state contribution, in real terms, does not constitute meaningful capital on its own, but when combined with regular family savings, the Baby Bond becomes a secure and high-yield investment form. A further objective is to determine the monthly savings required to achieve significant goals, such as tuition or home purchase. The methodology is based on empirical statistical analysis, yield modeling, and inflation-adjusted calculations, taking into account legal changes and the historical performance of the program. Findings suggest that the state contribution alone – even when invested in Baby Bonds – is only sufficient for minor expenses. However, with regular monthly savings of HUF 10,000 and a 10% state top-up, a child can accumulate over HUF 4 million by the age of 18. The scheme's primary value lies in encouraging long-term, goal-oriented saving by families, while the state guarantees real returns and additional support.
