Summary/Abstract: This review examines Ali Smith’s novels Gliff and Glyph as closely related works that confront the everyday apocalypses of the present through dystopian fiction. The analysis focuses on childhood, surveillance, technocratic control, language, war, memory, and the possibilities of resistance within systems that seek to classify, silence, and discipline human beings. Particular attention is given to the way Smith’s duology links fiction, collective storytelling, and personal responsibility, suggesting that narratives do not merely represent history but also shape the forms of action through which history may still be changed.
