Summary/Abstract: After the Second World War, the Romanian communist leadership adopted a hostile attitude towards the Szekler origin myth. The Szeklers’ belief in their Hun origins, centred on Csaba, the legendary son of Attila, did not fit the official doctrine of the Daco-Roman origins of the Romanian people. Although it was forbidden to write or speak about this subject in public, the Szekler origin myth survived within families, in the religious education classes taught by some pastors in Hungarian churches, and through students’ extracurricular activities. Covert references in certain literary works also served as hidden supports for this survival.
