Image and Capability

Summary/Abstract: This study explores the theological and philosophical meaning of the imago Dei (image of God) through the relationship between image and capability. While most rabbis, theologians, and philosophers interpret the divine image primarily as a set of human capacities – such as reason, freedom, creativity, or moral responsibility – the Hungarian language itself expresses this connection in a unique way: the words kép (“image”) and képesség (“capability”) share the same linguistic root. The title Image and Capability therefore points to a conceptual relation that is difficult to reproduce in other languages. The paper argues that the biblical prohibition of images does not deny the significance of images, but rather redirects attention towards the human being as the living image of God, whose divine likeness is manifested precisely in human capabilities, responsibility, and relational existence within an increasingly visual and digital culture.
