Translatability of Authorial Neologisms in Literary Fiction: The Case of “Time Shelter” in Czech

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the translatability of author-created neologisms in literary texts through the case of the novel “Time Shelter” by G. Gospodinov and its translation into Czech. The focus falls on the title as a paratextual element and on its role as the first interpretive key to the work. The analysis explores the authorial neologism in the title in Bulgarian, which blends semantic layers from different conceptual domains to form a new meaning specific to the novel’s fictional world. In the Czech translation, this neologism is rendered through a translator-created neologism that preserves the core metaphorical structure and functional load of the original. The discussion demonstrates that successfully conveying authorial neologisms requires a creative approach, sensitivity to paratextual features, and the ability to construct new linguistic solutions that align with the productive word-formation patterns of the target language while reflecting the poetics of the source text.
