Summary/Abstract: The study proceeds from the assumption that under favorable contextual conditions – most notably in subordinate adverbial clauses of time, condition, and purpose, as well as in relative clauses – syntagmatic neutralization of oppositions along one, two, or three features may occur. Its realization may lead to the replacement of the expected temporal form under sequential tense agreement between the main and subordinate clause by a form belonging to another, less marked tense category. Evidence for this claim derives from a questionnaire survey conducted among 3166 respondents. The article tests, through the chi-square method, the relationships between respondents’ preferences for the temporal form in the subordinate clause under conditions of possible syntagmatic neutralization (as the dependent variable) and the independent variable of place of residence during the first seven years of life. The analysis also seeks to determine the precise nature of the statistically confirmed relationships.
