Summary/Abstract: The article examines the acquisition of Bulgarian aspectual morphology by children up to 3 years of age. One of the important problems in this process is the omission of verb prefixes during the telegraphic stage of child development, which is universal in nature. The theoretical understanding of children’s telegraphic speech production between the 1970s and the first decade of the 21st century is traced. The emphasis is placed on the prosodic constraints associated with the syllabic versus non-syllabic realization of aspectual affixes, the accentual structure of verb forms and their dependence on the structure of the minimal word. The theoretical predictions regarding the process of mastering Bulgarian modal morphology are tested on empirical data excerpted from the speech production of three longitudinally studied Bulgarian children.
