Summary/Abstract: Alongside art intended for contemplation, artistic forms that replace the art object with action have become increasingly widespread in recent times. These are usually process-based forms, often involving other people in the action itself. The article proposes the concept of art-as-action as a term under which these artistic forms may be brought together. It presents its subcategories: events, situations, performances, social sculpture, relational art, participatory art, street art, and artivism. After offering a general description of these categories and analysing selected examples, the article turns to the problems raised by art-as-action: the difficulty of situating it as art, the marginalisation of the aesthetic in favour of usefulness, and the challenges involved in presenting or communicating it.
