Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to trace the relationship between melancholy, alienation, aesthetic experience, and the process of self-determination. In this context, melancholy becomes a framework for a state of incompleteness of being, where the absence of a predetermined essence becomes fundamental for self-affirmation and existential reflection. By classifying melancholy as a dialectical relationship with absence and fostering its engagement with a world populated by contradictions, the role of music in this analysis becomes fundamental due to its capacity to contain a particularly complex spectrum of emotions simultaneously. Music thus functions as a symbolic appropriation of reality and an investigation of personal identity, allowing for a response to the inherent dissonances of human experience through the conceptual framework of melancholy. Lastly, this dialectical condition is proposed as an aesthetic category, facilitating mediation — or, in dialectical terms, co-existence — between interiority and exteriority, in order to transcend the condition of contemplation towards that of (self-)creation.
