Summary/Abstract: This study examines the complaint-themed verses found in the poetry of the renowned Islamic scholar Imam al-Shāfiʿī. Although complaint, like wisdom poetry in general, was not treated as an independent poetic theme in classical Arabic literature, it continued to appear from the Jāhiliyyah onward within various poetic genres across different periods and regions. Indeed, despite changing social and historical circumstances, it is possible to speak of certain recurring subjects of human complaint. Verses of complaint, as authentic reflections of the individual’s emotional and intellectual world, illuminate both the poet’s inner life and the social fabric of the society in which he lived. In this respect, complaint poetry possesses not only literary significance but also historical and sociological value. Imam al-Shāfiʿī (d. 204/820), the eponym of one of the four major Sunni schools of law, was not only a towering authority in Islamic sciences, particularly jurisprudence, but also a scholar distinguished by his poetic talent. Considering poetry’s capacity to convey emotions and ideas with sincerity, his verses offer rich material for the study of both personal and social forms of complaint. The introduction of this study addresses the commonalities and distinctions between the theme of complaint and related literary themes. The first chapter briefly discusses the place of complaint in Arabic literature, while the second chapter presents a general evaluation of Imam alShāfiʿī’s literary personality and his dīwān. The third chapter, which constitutes the core of the study, analyses Imam al-Shāfiʿī’s complaint-themed verses under various subheadings. These include social issues such as the exaltation of unworthy individuals in society, scholars reduced to servitude at the doors of tyrannical rulers, the squandering of knowledge in the hands of the unqualified, the failure to fulfil the rights of friendship, disloyalty, envy, and hypocrisy, as well as the poet’s personal grievances and individual complaints arising from unrequited love. A general consideration of Imam al-Shāfiʿī’s complaint poetry reveals that these verses, rather than expressing rebellion, were composed in a critical yet constructive and guiding tone that draws attention to the moral and social problems of society. From this perspective, his poetry may also be regarded as a body of texts carrying ethical and pedagogical messages. Furthermore, these verses provide additional insights into alShāfiʿī’s character. He emerges as a figure who attached great importance to friendship and loyalty, who displayed exceptional sensitivity toward preserving the dignity of knowledge, and who despised insincerity and affectation. By contrast, those who embodied opportunism, hypocrisy, and moral inconsistency appear as the types he found most objectionable and would never tolerate in his circle. Accordingly, al-Shāfiʿī’s verses of complaint are of considerable importance, both because they offer a critical panorama of the social distortions of his age and because they contain valuable clues for understanding his personal and moral world.
