THE TRADITIONAL CARPET IN CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT: MESSAGE, IMAGE, SYMBOL

Summary/Abstract: In the 21st century, when the beginnings of technologicalization and the shock caused by the need of adapting to it are only distant memories, now, the human being is faced with a new challenge: the dilemma of preserving traditions and old customs, when there is a temptation to discard or leave them behind, to the advantage of there lentless expansion, specific to the Internet age. Starting from the traditional Romanian carpets, to the contemporary Afghan carpets or those made by the Navajo ethnic group, I will present in this paper a short study based on exploring the symbols and messages addressed in their ornamentation.Illustrated by simple people, these carpets, whether traditional or contemporary, display ornaments with a mythological substratum, hiding messages that refer to fundamental, ancient myths.
