Soft Rains, New Rhymes: A Quality Assessment of Lule Prilli, the First Albanian Teasdale Anthology

Summary/Abstract: This study provides a comparative analysis of Sara Teasdale’s lyric poetry and her Albanian translations by Irena Cani, examining the first ten English-Albanian couplets from the bilingual anthology Lule Prilli (2022). We apply a six-level evaluation rubric—semantic fidelity, imagery, tone and prosody, voice, lexical style, and poetic effect—to assess how faithfully and artistically the translations convey Teasdale’s content and style. Drawing on poetry translation theories and textual examples, we identify the translator’s dominant strategies: closely preserving meaning and imagery, occasionally softening certain nuances, not fully preserving rhyme and meter but compensating with other sonic devices, preserving lyrical voice, and supporting emotional state. The results show that while some poetic features are inevitably “lost” in translation, the Albanian versions largely recreate Teasdale’s blend of simplicity, musicality, and heartfelt emotion. This six-level comparison highlights specific techniques (e.g., preserving imagery, using free verse) and reflects on broader implications for the translation of lyric poetry into Albanian. This demonstrates that a multifaceted assessment illuminates the delicate balance a translator strikes between fidelity and creativity, providing insights for comparative literature, translation studies, and cross-cultural literary appreciation.
