Summary/Abstract: Unlike Nichita Stănescu, Cezar Baltag, Ana Blandiana, and other prominent figures of the 60’s Generation, whose early volumes contain numerous poems marked by Communism and by a youthful adhesion to it, the poets who made their debut in the second wave at the end of Dej era, and the beginning of Ceaușescu’s, synchronized themselves with the period’s relative ideological liberalization. However, Emil Brumaru and the other second wave poets were unable to enter the school canon. The portrayal of the new poetic modernism through Leonid Dimov’s “dreams”, Emil Brumaru’s “sponge cake butterflies”, Ileana Mălăncioiu’s tragical dramatism or the visceral authenticity of Angela Marinescu represented, in the context of the time and of a single centrally prescribed Romanian literature textbook with limited space, an impossibility. The article investigates and problematizes this complex socio-cultural and literary reality, revealing the way the professional criticism, after noting the originality of Brumaru’s poems since his editorial debut, continued following the author in his creative journey from one book to another, writing in a focused and comprehensive manner about the poet’s lyrical creation in its evolution.
