Summary/Abstract: The study presents the life and scientific career of János Martonyi Sen. As a member of the Magyary School, he dealt with administrative law. The first half of his work took place in the civil era of administrative law, the second part in the socialist era. From 1940, Martonyi Sen. taught at the Department of Administrative and Financial Law at the Royal Hungarian Ferenc József University of Science in Cluj-Napoca, then from 1945 he was a public extraordinary professor and then head of department at the Department of Administrative and Financial Law (after 1949: Department of Public Administrative Law) of the University of Szeged. From the 1960s, especially in the academic years of 1961 and 1965, he was a guest lecturer at several French higher education institutions. He was awarded the title of Doctor of Science (today: Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences) (DSc.) in the field of legal and political studies in 1966. In addition to several independent volumes, his monograph titled Judicial Review of State Administration Decisions, published in 1960, is the monographic form of the dissertation submitted for the award of the title (Academic) Doctor of State and Law (DSc.), and is a classic foundational work of Hungarian comparative administrative law. A separate appendix summarizes many of his university notes.
