RHETORICAL DEVICE OF IḤTIRĀS IN THE QURʾĀN: PRESERVING MEANING AND STYLISTIC VALUE

Summary/Abstract: Although the rhetorical device of iḥtirās has been discussed only briefly within the discipline of rhetoric, it stands out as a stylistic feature that reinforces meaning and completes expression in the discursive structure of the Qurʾān. Despite its importance, however, this device has not been examined in a sufficiently systematic manner either in classical rhetorical works or in the literature of Qurʾānic exegesis. In classical sources, the concept of iḥtirās is mentioned under different names and within relatively limited semantic frameworks. For this reason, the emergence of iḥtirās as a clearly defined and independent rhetorical term took place relatively late in the historical development of rhetorical literature. Considering this situation in the classical tradition, the present study aims to reveal the stylistic characteristics of iḥtirās, to identify its occurrences in the Qurʾān, and to analyze the distinctive rhetorical subtleties associated with this device. In this context, particular attention is given to the instructive and guiding function of iḥtirās in Qurʾānic discourse. Accordingly, the study examines the role of this device in strengthening the rhetorical force of Qurʾānic expression and in enriching the semantic depth of the text. The findings indicate that iḥtirās occupies a distinctive place within the declarative structure of the Qurʾān and holds importance from the perspectives of both rhetoric and Qurʾānic exegesis. At the same time, the study shows that iḥtirās has sometimes been confused with certain rhetorical devices that share similarities with it in meaning and context. Clarifying the distinctive features and conceptual boundaries of iḥtirās contributes to a more accurate understanding of the literary devices found in the Qurʾān. Overall, the study demonstrates that iḥtirās functions not only as a stylistic element but also as a semantic mechanism that preserves meaning and contributes to the coherence and rhetorical richness of Qurʾānic discourse.
