Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper was to contribute to understanding of the Bulgarian–Yugoslav dispute over the Macedonian question, by analyzing the historiographical dispute over the legacy of Gotse Delchev in the period after the March Plenum of the Central Comitee of the Bulgarian Communist Party in 1963. Particular emphasis was placed on analysis of the historiographical works – especially biographies of Gotse Delchev published during the period which saw the intensification of the publishing activity dedicated to this topic. Two countries took turns taking the initiative, with the most activity in periods 1967–1972 and 1978–1979, centered around anniversary of Delchev’s birth and death, with SR Macedonia being the bearer of this activity in Yugoslavia. In both countries, the heroic cult of Gotse Delchev was primarily used for national policy goals. At first, it has been only internal defending of the “historical truth”, but later both countries started with broader promotion of their ideas by translating publications about Gotse Delchev and publishing them internationally. In the case of SR Macedonia, translations to languages of other Yugoslav peoples was also important.
