Summary/Abstract: During the years marked by political crisis of “welfare state” in the countries of Western Europe and the changes in international relations caused by the policies of the détente, League of Communists of Yugoslavia played a complex role in development of relations between major communist parties of Western and Eastern Europe. Starting as a leading party within Reformist Bloc of the European Marxists, LCY slowly took upon itself a role of a mediator between the Eurocommunist parties and the more conservative communist parties of the Eastern Bloc. Gradually, Yugoslav communists managed to reach the zenith of their influence on the European far-left by expanding cooperation with both the reformist and conservative fractions of the European communists. However, long term consequences of abandoning policies of internal democratization, market liberalization and decentralization adopted by the LCY during late 1960s and early 1970s eventually brought the evolution of Yugoslav party’s ideology on a path that was very close to the one followed by the Eastern European communists during the last decade of the Cold War. Subsequently, during the course of the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Western Europe was facing the rise of the new neoliberal ideology, Yugoslav communists already showed signs of moving away from their Eurocommunist allies in the West towards developing closer relations with other authoritarian communist parties of Eastern Europe and of East Asia.
