Summary/Abstract: The present article is situated at the intersection of variational pragmatics, pragmatics, and variationist linguistics, and examines the extent to which the edited volume „Variationspragmatik: Regionale Vielfalt und situative Unterschiede im Sprachgebrauch“ contributes to the further profiling of this research field, which has not yet been fully consolidated. The starting point is the observation that, while language variation in German linguistics has long been studied at the phonological, lexical, morphological, and syntactic levels, language use as a locus of pragmatic variation has been systematically integrated into the variationist framework less frequently. Against this background, the article analyses the volume as a programmatic attempt to jointly capture regional and situational dynamics of language use and thereby to further outline an empirically and methodologically robust German variational pragmatics. The review pursues three main objectives: first, to reconstruct the conceptual framework of the volume; second, to situate individual studies with regard to their contribution to the theoretical and methodological differentiation of the field; and third, to assess the overall scholarly contribution of the publication.Methodologically, the article follows a systematic and comparative review approach that takes into account programmatic frameworks, empirical findings, and methodological approaches alike. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between regional and situational variation, the scope of the phenomena addressed, and the question of how different approaches – for instance, from register studies, research on digital communication, or interactional linguistics – can be integrated into a common research programme. The analysis demonstrates that the volume does not treat pragmatic variation merely as a supplement to established variationist approaches, but rather profiles it as an autonomous research perspective. Of particular note are the combination of diatopic and diaphasic approaches, the inclusion of digital forms of communication, the opening towards interactional and metapragmatic questions, and the extension to phenomena of textual and knowledge organisation. Overall, the volume proves to be an important stimulus for further development of usage-based variationist linguistics. The publication’s scholarly contribution lies above all in making variational pragmatics visible as a methodologically diverse, theoretically well-integrated, and highly productive research programme for the analysis of German language use.
