Summary/Abstract: The present paper shows the importance of decoding cultural references in japanese cartoons (Anime) that had a primordial factor to: convey different cultures, transmit the lives of peoples who belong to different nations and societies and even break the barriers between the frontiers of the world. The crucial point of this research is to decipher and carry out a rigorous analysis of some images taken from Japanese cartoons produced in the ’80s and ’90s which may be indefinable by viewers who see this type of animated series either due to a lack of knowledge of the culture or due to concentration with the humorous language of the characters. Furthermore, the references selected for our investigation are composed of implicit and explicit ones with the aim of highlighting the power of Anime in the representation of different cultures in an authentic and expressive way.
