The Deviation from the Norm in the Layout of the Carolingian Manuscript as a Stage in the Development of Unconventional Typographical Approaches in the Art of the Book

Summary/Abstract: The Carolingian Renaissance introduced a clearly defined standard in the layout of manuscripts. A comparative analysis of two 9th-century copies of the astronomical poem „Phenomena“ by the ancient Greek poet Aratus focuses on three aspects that are important for the art of the book and typography: how different these two visual interpretations of the same text are, how the deviation from the norm in one manuscript adds new content on a visual level, and how this unconventional approach to the layout of the medieval manuscript is part of the evolution of experimental forms of typography, which began before the Common Era and continues to the present day.
