Humanism and Homosexuality

Summary/Abstract: The article examines scientific discourses on homosexuality in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria between 1960 and 1989. The study aims to reconstruct the conceptualization of homosexuality in sexology and social sciences and to place the battles around its significance in the context of the biopolitical rationality of the socialist regime of social reproduction. To this end, scientific and popular science works are analyzed, raising questions related to reproduction – whilst turning sexuality into a field of research and intervention. The article traces the establishment of sexology, which constructs homosexuality as a medical problem. The analysis demonstrates the instability and heterogeneous understandings of homosexuality. It outlines two discursive lines of homosexuality – as incurable and curable – which produce their own logics of transgression: a) the depathologization of homosexuality as a normal variant of human sexuality, and b) the blurring of the line between heterosexuality and homosexuality as a constitutive, unchangeable element in humans.
