Summary/Abstract: The article examines the final chapters of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, analysing the specific emphases Lewis Carroll places on the conduct of the trial: Alice’s hunger, which turns into a „preclusive“ force propelling the proceedings forward and ultimately leading to the termination of the „case“; the role of the court „writers“ (jurors) in recording the production of evidence; the organisation of the spontaneous unrest of the guinea-pig audience through the use of hemp sacks; and the King’s ability to interpret „empty“ witness testimony and anonymous letters formulated in poetic form. The analysis foregrounds the functioning of legal norms as linguistic rules and the impact of the grammar of speech on the legitimacy of legal norms. It concludes by considering the King and the Queen as literary figures that serve as testing grounds for the problems posed by the incursion of artificial intelligence into the realm of adjudication.
