Summary/Abstract: The book as a doctrinal manual, in the form of a catechism, has been used, from the sixteenth century to present day, both for the purpose of teaching the Christian religion to children, and as a tool for the instruction of priests or any lay person interested in religious issues. The study presents the Catechism of Jerome of Ripalda, which in sixteenth century Europe was the main instrument for countering the Reformation, and in Latin America it also responded to the needs of education and Christianization of the new territories. Being written in a simple manner, with questions and answers, it was successfully used for the purpose of evangelizing the new conquered populations in Latin America and the Philippines. Its effectiveness is explained, which in the author’s opinion was due to its translation from Spanish into indigenous languages or by the writing of bilingual editions. Over time, the populations that were catechized in this way replaced their indigenous languages with Spanish, which became their official language. Over time, it has undergone numerous reeditions, adaptations and additions to texts in accordance with the requirements of the times.
