Summary/Abstract: The aim of teaching music history is to provide comprehensive knowledge about a particular period in music history, composers and their works. It motivates students to learn as much as possible about the subject and encourages them to conduct independent research. The 20th century and the contemporary scene offer a wealth of material, providing an opportunity to explore composers and works that are not strictly part of the curriculum. The lecture focuses on the versatility of the work of two composers and educators. Research methods: library research, document analysis, mapping of sheet music. Research questions: What influences shaped the early careers of the two composers? What genres did they compose in? What characterized their social engagement? What music education literature did we map? Results: Erzsébet Szőnyi, born 100 years ago, was influenced by Kodály and her studies in France. Her creative work is characterized by diversity, as she tried her hand at many genres. From a pedagogical point of view, her Biciniumok, A zenei írás-olvasás módszertana a kezdettől a felsőfokig (Methodology of Music Reading and Writing from Beginner to Advanced Levels), A zenei írás-olvasás gyakorlófüzetei (Music Reading and Writing Workbooks), and her operas for children are particularly noteworthy. Her social engagement is marked by her introduction of the Kodály concept on five continents. István Vántus was born 90 years ago. He composed several genres. His works for chamber orchestra, oratorios, and operas are particularly noteworthy: The Three Wanderers and The Golden Coffin. His pedagogical works include Two Little Piano Pieces and Sound Groups. His social involvement is exemplary. He established the Contemporary Hungarian Music Week. After his death, the István Vántus Society was founded, which continues Vántus's legacy with the István Vántus Contemporary Music Days.
