Summary/Abstract: After the collapse of the USSR the Muslims from north Caucasus had to find themselves in a new and complex reality. To fight for independence or to surrender entirely to the Russian Federation? Chechenya has become the place supporting radicalism. Anna Politkowska believed that the war which lasted for many years as well as brutality of the authorities and appalling poverty led the Chechen society to moral decay. Families due to the lack of livelihood sometimes sold children into slavery and young girls became prostitutes. Militants in retaliation for the acts of humiliation and cruelty were as savage and ruthless as Russian soldiers. Chechen Black Widows have been active since June 7, 2000 when the first female suicide bombers, Khava Barayeva and Luisa Magomadova drove a truck filled with explosives into the temporary headquarters of an elite OMON detachment in the village of Alkhan Yurt in Chechnya. Chechen female suicide bombers were named Black Widows by the Russian and international press when it became clear that many were acting in revenge for the deaths of their sons, brothers and husbands. The residents of Russia perceived the war in Chechnya and the events taking place in North Caucasus as something distant, taking place on the outskirts of the Russian Federation. The attack on the theatre located in the very centre of Moscow – Dubrovkav has caused the great shock and horror. As one of the militants said: the war has come to Moscow.
