Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the transmission of transgenerational trauma in the novel Uhode by Derviš Sušić. The analysis focuses on the female characters Mevlija and Rahima, whose life stories, despite the temporal distance between them, reveal the continuity of social and collective control over women’s bodies and voices. Drawing on the theoretical insights of Nirman MoranjakBamburać, Judith Butler, bell hooks, Kimberlé Crenshaw and Gayatri Spivak the paper explores the relationship between trauma, silence and speach as well as the internalization of patriarchal norms. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which the social community participates in the disciplining of the female body. The episodic female characters introduce an intersectional dimension of trauma in which gendered oppression intersects with class and ethnicity. The paper argues that novel transcends the framework of the historical novel and can be read as critical comment on the persistence of patriarchal structures of power in Bosnian-Herzegovian society, where violence against women is not abolished but merely transformed according to historical context.
