The millennium of the coronation of Bolesław the Brave and Mieszko II Lambert and their presence in the public space

Summary/Abstract: This article presents contemporary forms of commemorating the millennium of the coronations of Bolesław I the Brave and Mieszko II Lambert in Poland . Drawing on a review of parliamentary resolutions, cultural institutions' programmes, informational and media materials, and promotional activities, it compiles a catalogue of initiatives present in the public sphere . These include, among others, state ceremonies such as the ceremonial Assembly of Deputies and Senators in Gniezno, open-air and re-enactment events, museum exhibitions, academic conferences, issuesthe minting of coins, the issue of and postage stamps, murals, as well as examples of commercial commemorative practices like clothing, jewellery, and railway rolling-stock wrapsveneer . The paper outlines the role of patron of the year resolutions as a formal impulse that structures the commemorative calendar, without entering into theoretical approaches to memory politics . It proposes an initial typology of commemorative forms and indicates the geographical and symbolic diversity of the practices undertaken . The text is descriptive in character and does not include research on the impact of the celebrations on historical consciousness or identity . The conclusion identifies avenues for further research, including survey studies and evaluations of the effectiveness of the activities undertaken .
