Bulgarian Sign Language as a Second Language: an Analysis of Lingistic Complexity and Learning Specifics

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the perceived complexity of Bulgarian Sign Language (BgSL) as a second/foreigner language among L2M2 university students, with the aim of supporting the development of teaching methodology. A questionnaire survey conducted among 33 students of Special education analyzed the difficulties encountered in mastering the core linguistic skills and aspects of BgSL. The results show that the greatest challenges arise in the active use of the language – particularly in coordinating expressive means, non-manual feathers, and spatial grammar, while receptive skills are perceived as relatively easier. The findings highlight that the acquisition of the language requires a specific approach adapted to its visual-spatial modality and emphasize the need for a particularly oriented, communicative teaching methodology.
