Jerzy Zawieyski's initial cooperation with the editorial office of "Tygodnik Powszechny" in the light of correspondence with Jerzy Turowicz in 1945-1953

Summary/Abstract: Jerzy Turowicz and Jerzy Zawieyski were intellectuals whose worldview took shape during the 1920s and 1930s. They met in the second half of the 20th century, and in 1957 they became leaders of a Catholic social movement named Znak. Turowicz was the editor-in-chief of the Kraków-based "Tygodnik Powszechny", the main Catholic publisher in Poland. Zawieyski, as the leader of the nationwide Znak movement, became a deputy of the 2nd-4th Sejm of the Polish People's Republic (1957-1968), a member of the Znak Deputies' Circle and the State Council. Zawieyski met Turowicz in 1945, when Father Jan Piwowarczyk worked alongside the Archbishop of Kraków Adam Sapieha to form a team of publicists for a new nationwide periodical addressed to the Catholic intelligentsia. Zawieyski's correspondence with Turowicz during their initial acquaintance reveals their areas of cooperation and joint initiatives in journalism, literature and theatre, in the milieu of two Kraków periodicals: the weekly "Tygodnik Powszechny" and the monthly "Znak".
