Summary/Abstract: A key assumption in the theory of emergent literacy is that in modern society, literacy develops from early childhood from real-world situations in which reading and writing are naturally embedded. By encouraging emergent literacy that comes across as a personally significant experience, children show interest in printed texts and try to read and write long before their formal training in these skills begins. Without opposing the commonly used methods and techniques in the field of language acquisition and speech development in kindergarten, but rather in addition to them, this publication aims to outline the essence of the emergent literacy approach as an affirmation of the personally significant experience of children, as well as to offer some pedagogical ideas for its successful application in the process of preparation for reading and writing in Bulgarian kindergartens as well as by parents at home, and in this regard to substantiate the need to update the modern legal framework of preschool education in our country in this regard, namely Decree № 5 from 3 June 2016 on preschool education.
