Summary/Abstract: Tobacco appeared in Gdańsk in the 16th century. In the following century, the drug had already gained considerable popularity in the city. It was smoked in long, uniform clay pipes, initially imported from England and the Netherlands. In addition, snuff was taken and tobacco leaves were chewed. The raw material was regarded as a panacea for a variety of illnesses and was used, among other things, to save accident victims, as evidenced by numerous instructions and recommendations from the second half of the 18th century. Despite the alleged health benefits of tobacco consumption, smoking was strictly prohibited in some parts of the city. This was due to the fire hazard posed by the use of pipes near warehouses of flammable goods.
