Summary/Abstract: We often talk about an interior space or a building having a certain atmosphere. Although the concept is often elusive and vague, it is still part of everyday experience. But what about a street, a part of a city, or even an entire city? The atmosphere of a city is a phenomenon accessible to everyone, shared by city dwellers and tourists alike. The users of the city are not only passive recipients of the urban atmosphere, but also jointly create and actively shape it. The life unfolding in the urban scene plays an important role in the interplay of many factors. The atmosphere of the city manifests itself as a background quality present everywhere and at every moment. Its scale at all times is our own lived body. The urban atmospheric landscape is created through physical presence and the act of walking, in which smells, sounds, and building silhouettes all invite movement and action. We perceive atmospheres not only through movement, but also through the way we move through the city. Urban textures, material qualities and tactile experiences are all accessible through slow passage. Walking keeps us in the city in an atmospheric sense, that is, through movement we can become part of the pulsating life in the city. We perceive the atmosphere of the environment as much as we ourselves participate in its creation. We can measure the rhythm and pulsation of the city less than we can feel it, experience it.
