Summary/Abstract: The aim of these considerations is to recreate the pace of cultural influences by determining at what stage of the exchange or acceptance of civilisational components do lasting changes in social consciousness occur, and whether political attitudes can be an indicator of these changes. This paper examines the situation faced by the indigenous peoples of southern Italy regarding Greek settlements established during the Great Colonisation, as well as the path they took from open hostility to a lasting alliance with their Greek neighbours. Due to the relatively rich source material, the article focuses on the Messapii - a people inhabiting the Salento Peninsula and Greek settlers from the only Spartan colony, Tarentum. A parallel look at the southern Italian cultural and political reality in the 8th-4th centuries BC leads to the conclusion that only after four centuries of cohabitation was a specific oikumene created - a southern Italian cultural community combining native and Greek components, and the culmination of local interactions was a sense of spiritual community expressed through political attitudes - the alliance of the Messapians with Taranto.
