Summary/Abstract: The present study aims to examine the interactions between the western crusaders and the local population – Orthodox Christians – Bulgarians and Greeks, on the one hand, and on the other – the attitude of Christians towards the Ottomans during the 1444 campaign in the Lower Danube region, i.e. in the lands of Dobrudja and the Black Sea Cost. These interactions will be analyzed based on the problematic relations between Western knights and the local population as the Crusaders passed through the Balkans and specifically through Bulgarian lands during the Crusades of the 11th–13th centuries in order to conclude whether there was a change in West–East interactions during the era of Ottoman domination in Southeastern Europe in the 15th century. The main sources used in the study are letters of the Pope Eugenius IV, letters of the Venetian Senate, the Letter of Andreas de Palazio, the Annals of the Polish historian Jan Długosz, the History of King Władysław by Filippo Buonacorsi Callimachus, the poem about King Władysław by the German poet Michael Beheim, the History of the Hungarians by Antonio Bonfini, etc.
