Female expatriates’ adjustment: prejudices and facilitators in host countries

Summary/Abstract: Women as expatriates have to meet cultural norms and social expectations, family duties and work responsibilities when they are on international assignments. This may require different behaviour in different places. The article examines what culturally-based prejudices they face in the adjustment process in host countries. We try to point out the host country nationals’ cultural attitudes and expectations toward female expatriates. Significant emphasis is placed on the potential for host country nationals to place barriers to female expatriates’ adjustment. Afterwards, cultural determinants, status at the organization, family status and female individual characteristics are discussed as assignments’ adjustment success facilitators.
