Summary/Abstract: The paper situates the Art after 9 September 1944 collection at the National Art Gallery within the broader context of dissonant heritage and explores the complex history of the postwar Bulgarian art scene. Archival records reveal that the National Art Gallery’s early expository strategies were often controversial. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, some of the initial attempts at Socialist Realist art were removed from display and loaned to other cultural institutions, where they remain today. The significance of these artworks lies in their status as historical artefacts of a shifting political landscape.
