Summary/Abstract: Robert Merton’s well-known work on Science, Technology and Society in the Seventeenth-Century England has proven to be not only a case study but also a paradigm for the sociological study of science. It has been argued that modern science developed as a result of the favourable conditions provided by the cultural context of modernity and its various social utilities. The working hypothesis I outline in this study is that postmodernism undermines many of the assumptions that generated modern science and that in the new cultural context science itself will transform itself at least in terms of its relations with society as a whole and with its citizens as epistemic subjects.
