Summary/Abstract: A look back at 1996, when the Department of Children’s and Youth Literature was established at the Faculty of Education, University of Ostrava, alongside the Department of Didactics—Ostrava’s first specialized academic research center. This was followed by annual international interdisciplinary seminars, known as roundtables, preceded by an April lecture by Slovak researcher Milan Jurčo on non-fiction. Jurčo became the codifier of its terminological definition. He based his views on a broad knowledge base; through his passion and polemical spirit, he stimulated literary-theoretical reflection on the entire field of writing for children and young adults. This paper points to a recurring oscillation between the complex relationships and affinities of non-fiction (factual) literature and fictional modes. At the same time, in contemporary works, we observe a significant shift toward the visualization of literary narratives and the search for new forms of communication with young readers.
